Kabouter started as a collection of demos recorded in a bedroom in London in 2007 by guitarist Stephen Eckard. Never having intended to perform the songs live the newly found freedom allowed for greater artistic expression and a departure from former musical meanderings in previous bands Passenger and Saturnine. Upon his return to Cape Town South Africa, Stephen met up with long time friend Greg Morgan (ex- Passenger and Saturnine member) and the two started working together on the demos and morphing them in to what would eventually become Kabouter. Next step…band members! Calvin Talbot auditioned for the band as drummer and was immediately asked to join based on potential and skill as well as having known Greg and Stephen from their previous bands based in Durban. Another Durbanite friend, Johan Venter, mentioned in a drunken night out that he would like to play synth/keyboards for the band. As the band had incorporated electronic/synth elements in to the music it was a no brainer to have Johan join the line up. After many vocalist auditions, some good…others not so good, they stumbled upon Mat Aylen who had previously wanted to audition as second guitarist but pulled out at the last minute due to doubting his guitar playing ability. Luckily for the band he auditioned as vocalist and immediately struck a chord with the members in the rehearsal space. Kabouter was now officially a band. With an emphasis on keeping the music interesting and progressive yet striving for pop sensibility in a rock and roll setting, the band is set to unleash the Kabouter live show on South African shores by the end of 2010. Having already played warm up shows at Purple Turtle and Zula bar the band intend to return to the studio to focus on completing the EP as well as preparations for future gigs. Currently in Bellville Studios with producer Charlie Murder, the band is set to finish recording their 3 track EP in the next few months. Kabouter time!
