- in 1972 - The BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" premiered in the UK, distinctly catering for the rock audience. Criticized in the late '70s for being "run by a bunch of old hippies" the show underwent modernisation in 1985, changing it's name to "Whistle Test". The title came from the Edwardian England music publishers' dictum: "If the grey haired music hall doorman was heard whistling your song then it would be a hit."
