- in 1970 - The Grateful Dead played their first UK date at the Hollywood Music Festival in Newcastle. Also on the bill were Steppenwolf, Family and new band at the time Mungo Jerry. The Dead's set lasted four hours.
Two other pop and rock festivals took place in the UK on this day, at Bath there were performances most notably by Wishbone Ash, Argent and Fleetwood Mac while at Plumpton Tom Rush, Free and Van der Graff Generator among others stepped up.

The Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" does not stand for "LSD", the title actually comes from John Lennon's son Julian, who left his mark on more than one Beatles song. His drawing of a nursery school classmate Lucy O'Donnell caught his father's eye and when asked what it was called Julian replied, "Lucy in the sky with diamonds".
