The Music of Leonard Cohen

[ Read Article ]
What I learned, deduced or surmised from recently listening to the music of Leonard Cohen. (by Sheerluck Poems, the musical detective.)

1. Leonard Cohen is probably a Canadian of French extraction, raised as a Catholic, yet with a Jewish name. He attended French music social events in Canada featuring the French Accordion instrument as a child and later became a published poet. He played guitar from about the age of 12, mostly folk music (Spanish guitar - nylon strings with emphasis on picking). He later moved to New York.

The French Accordion scale themes are prominent in many of his songs e.g. "Famous Blue Raincoat"... read more?

Master of Rock Review - Cape Town

[ Read Article ]
After a short break, the audience returned to the arena for the long-awaited Deep Purple. The lights went out, and the crowd went mad. After a moment of excited hysteria, the arena fell silent, crackling with anticipation. And then the sound of Prokofiev's dramatic "Montagues and Capulets" filled the arena.

It's not often we have big names performing in South Africa, and even more seldom we have big names worth listening to. Imagine my delight when the rumours of a Deep Purple performance started doing the rounds! Despite the pricey tickets, I figured no price would be too high for the privilege of a live performance from one of my all-time favourites.

So off we went to Grand West's Arena. The show started with Wishbone Ash giving an excellent performance. Their sounds was rich... read more?

The typically hated genre of music disciplines…. Dinner Theatre.
But wow, even for a partially filled venue, it was so damn cosy and interestingly enough….warm and friendly.

As before I was astounded at the transformation of this great band as either the practice or exposure was making a difference for they were really good.
They looked so much more comfortable in their delivery and internal communication that the playing has transformed into… well a professional band.
Seemingly amateur and demure when taking the stage, they improve on almost every note they take and I...

I've heard this particular album rated as the album Opeth wish they could produce. I beg to fuckin' differ! This review was originally written for www.metal-archives.com

This particular album gave me a lot to think about. Not because I found the music to be particularly thought provoking but because every review I read had such exaltations of awe and majesty. I thought to myself, “Shit, this fucker’s got to be something!” I was waiting impatiently for my hallelujah moment but it failed to arrive. Come Taste the Band - Vol 8 - Motorhead

Lemmy was fired from Hawkwind in May 1975 for, as he says, "doing the wrong drugs". He was arrested on suspicion of possessing cocaine at the Canadian border and spent five days in prison causing the band to cancel some of their North America tour dates. Now on his own Lemmy decided to form a new band, Motörhead, inspired by the final song he had written for Hawkwind.

The Maniacal Vale - A study in the art of Doom Metal

Esoteric's 'The Maniacal Vale' might be an odd choice of listening selection for a mid-November day in South Africa but with this crazy cold weather, it is the perfect aural accompaniment to the gloomy sky I am staring at right now.

Esoteric, for those who might not know, is a funeral doom outfit hailing from Birmingham in the United Kingdom. They are one of the most superb, dynamic and consistent metal acts around. Now, I don’t give out this sort of praise willy-nilly but this band really deserves some serious accolades. On the other hand there are doom metal bands and then there are doom metal bands. It was here that Blackmore spent his off time from Deep Purple and met vocalist Ronnie James Dio.

Wazzup Rockers!

After all these recent tragic events and incidents in the world of sport (i.e. the suicide of Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke, the embarrassing performance of our national anthem before the rugby match against France or the “hand of god goal – revisited” scandal last night that has robbed Ireland of their participation in the 2010 World Cup…) it is a strong reminder that MUSIC is still a far better option for escapism….so it’s time again for another ‘Come Taste The Band’... read more?

THORNROSE Battle of the Bands - 10th Round - Black Dahlia

[ Read Article ]
Band competition almost at a head...

By Now Black Dahlia has gotten to know me pretty well, to the point where I don’t actually pay, I walk in and smile saying “hidy ho” to all and they greet me by name… “big deal” you may say, but, I tell you, that recognition is recognition no matter whether it is for the idiocy that precedes you or the genius in your wake. If someone can respect you enough to use your name, then you have made a difference …. Haven’t you?? ** Perhaps perception is but a joint smoke away**

The last time I... read more?

Musical event in its 2nd running held at Lietjieboer function Venue in Centurion

This not too far out the way venue, was filled with biker from the event prior… and me in my demure way considered it to perhaps be the wrong venue as the signage pointing the way was non existent… perhaps the very cool couple of Danielle the tattoo artist, who reminds me so much of “Kat” from Miami ink on DSTV and Micky her ever attentive hubby who is the originator and organiser… should consider the “passing” crowds and lost revel seekers when it comes to signage…. But be that as it may as... read more?

3rd Round – 01.10.09 – Cool Running’s

Fourways Cool Running’s run by another Bradley….(I have met soooo many Brads in the entertainment industry.. freeky) had a very different atmosphere tonight and as I walked in I was greeted with a uniquely growled out singer who welcomed me with a melody fit for a king….. THAT’S ME!!. Yay!!….. so don’t get any ideas.. hehe…. Uhmm! Any way enough about me.

I walked into a fully fledged rocking song…. and was “befokk’d” as I thought they were just a warm upper band… .and sorely wished that... read more?

The crowd, more than their supporters, all the way from Parys, (nog al), cheered them into the second song, “I hate you” that sent shiver up my spine. Their lyrics and melody, introduced with excellent finework by Stevo… not a bad guit who plays rhythm and lead

Simple black based with red accented dĂ©cor on the outside, so dark and demur that I missed the entrance totally…. Following through the black padded door one walks straight... read more?

This like all my reviews are centred around the little guys... the up and coming wanna be's. I not only review each band but the host venue, events coordinators and affiliated service providers.

Doesn’t the name Armageddon just ring “death & destruction” and a mean party for heavy moshers and bangers with loose brains?
Certainly by the end of the evening I can say the remnants of Armageddon was evident as the moshing and stage diving made for a great party and certainly excellent entertainment….. with one rather heavy stage diver enthusiastically concussing himself 3 times till he totally knocked himself out all together… .read on and you will find out the finer details…... read more?

Excessive rock-star lifestyles and rampant music-industry greed aren't sound ideas.

The global recession is biting so hard, Sir Mick Jagger was spotted driving around London in a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle singing "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction". Jagger's biggest gripe isn't that his long-time sparring partner, Keith Richards, might have snorted his father's ashes or that former band manager Allen Klein might have siphoned off a few million dollars of hard-earned royalties. Instead, it is the... read more?
