Over 15,000 music lovers are expected to head for Limpopo this weekend for the Oppikoppi Festival which has been rated the fourth best foreign music festival in the world by UK tabloid the Daily Mirror.
The dusty Northam farm will host the 15th annual Oppikoppi festival which this year features 85 local bands. Festival head Carel Hoffman said Oppikoppi has been “getting recognition both at home and abroad for over ten years now”.
“We’ve always done what we want, and had as much fun doing it as we possibly could. There’s no other way to go about it — if you’re not enjoying yourself then there’s no point in continuing,” he said.
Bands and stars like The Parlotones, The Dirty Skirts, aKing, Kwani Experience, Karen Zoid, Thandiswa Mazwai, Koos Kombuis, Taxi Violence, Zebra and Giraffe will take to the stage during the festival which has been dubbed a National Monument by international clothing brand Levis.
Renowned guitarist Vusi Mahlasela said he has played at Oppikoppi many times and “it’s always been an incredible experience”.
“Oppikoppi really give you the platform to showcase yourself, and it’s wonderful that it’s not just the noted artists who perform, they’re always breaking new acts,” he said.
“The stages are always full of so many different artists playing so many different styles.”
