South Africa's OppiKoppi music festival has been ranked fourth in the UK Daily Mirror’s list of the Top Ten Music Festivals taking place outside mainland Britain.
"Like Glastonbury, only hotter," says the Daily Mirror.co.uk in describing the now 15 year old festival which sees "home-grown bands and DJ’s rub shoulders with European talent under the expansive African sky."
Ranking ahead of OppiKoppi in the top three spots are the Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium, Benicassim in Spain and Fuji Rocks which is held in the valley of Mount Fuji in Japan.
"We are really happy about being included in the rankings. It’s really an honour to be the only African festival to feature on the list," said Annelie Hoffman of OppiKoppi Productions.
The OppiKoppi headline festival which takes place every August on the official OppiKoppi farm in Northam, Limpopo Province will be turning fifteen this year.
The first festival was orientated towards Afrikaans rock music and attracted over 1000 music lovers. Hoffman says the festival has since grown to attract in the region of 15 000 people and reflects the diverse musical offerings available in South Africa.
"The success of OppiKoppi rests on the fact that we have always stayed true to South African music and we have allowed the festival to grow to reflect the diverse cultures we have in our country," says Hoffman
This year's festival will take place from the 7th to the 10th of August.
In the meantime however, OppiKoppi Productions will be hosting their Not Quite Easter Festival on 25-27 April also in Northam. Some of the bands that will be appearing include Henry Ate, Tidal Waves, Kidofdoom and Van Coke Kartel.
